Capacity, The Impact Multiplier: Why Investing in Institutions Delivers Lasting Change

India’s social sector has long delivered significant value, but its true potential is often limited by chronic underinvestment in institutional capacity. “Capacity, The Impact Multiplier: Why Investing in Institutions Delivers Lasting Change” explores the journeys of 18 high-impact NGOs, demonstrating that organisations which deliberately invest in leadership, systems, evidence, and culture do not just improve—they multiply their impact. The report finds that capacity building is not an overhead, but a strategic multiplier: organisations that strengthened their institutional foundations saw impact grow five to eight times faster than their budgets.

The study identifies six domains where capacity building delivers the greatest returns: strategy, leadership and governance, fundraising and communications, talent and culture, monitoring, evaluation and learning (M.E.L), and technology. It highlights that sequencing investments is critical—building the right capabilities at the right moment unlocks exponential growth, while mis-sequencing or short-termism can suppress the multiplier effect.

The report calls for a shift in mindset: from funding projects to investing in resilient institutions, and from episodic interventions to embedding capacity building as a continuous discipline. Through practical frameworks and actionable insights, it offers guidance for NGO leaders and funders, emphasising that building strong institutions is the surest path to scalable, sustainable, and equitable social impact
